Mexico Democracy

Democracy requires several elements to succeed and grow. The leaders of a democracy must respect the boundaries they are given. Freedom of the press is an essential element of modern democracy. People must be willing to participate and support the system of government. Classes may exist in a democracy, but should not be perceived as a detriment to participation in a democracy. Cultural and ethnic cohesion will support a ‘group think’ toward policy and ideals. Mexico during its history lacked several of the elements for a successful democracy.Mexican independence was initially a continuation of Spanish colonialism. The government was not able to see a way forward without continuing policy. Every new nation has a bumpy time converting from monarchy to democracy, but Mexico faced a difficult cultural change. The Catholic Church had a strict hierarchy that also permeated the culture of Mexico and the indigenous people did not have a fair voice in the new government. The wars with France, the US and Texas did not help stabilize a new democracy and led to dissatisfaction and a non-cohesive government.Democracy could not grow in this environment and led to further dissatisfaction with the ‘democracy’ in Mexico. This allowed for a long period of dictatorship under Porfirio Diaz. Mexico was an agrarian society at the time and the lack of education led itself to a dictatorship. Although Diaz brought science and industry to Mexico, he did not allow democracy to flourish under this success. Diaz was more concerned with keeping centralized power of the country and did not allow mass participation in government. Any dissent was silenced. The press was not free and was used by the government to strengthen the Diaz government.Without freedom of the press and centralized power Mexico could not gain true democracy. A free press allows citizens the ability to criticize and form opinions of their government. Mexico did not have this ability under Diaz. Th e growth of the Haciendados continued to keep democracy at bay. With an uneducated and rural population, it is difficult to bring the ideals of democracy to the masses. One of the elements of a successful democracy is a literate voting block. Class seperation, education and the disenfranchisement of citizens continued to keep democracy at bay.Following the revolution of 1910, the leaders of the revolution were unable to gather a productive government. The ideals of revolution were difficult to govern; therefore the government reverted to learned behavior of the previous dictatorship. The cultural divide between indigenous tribes, Crillios and Spaniards was a further detriment to equality under the law in Mexico. The industrial revolution had already started tapping Mexican resources for production in the US and other countries. Corruption was continued and allowed to flourish to keep rebellious elements of the country under control.A democracy cannot move forward with a government t hat allows corruption. Fuentes speaks of the problems with a strong sense of national cohesion or â€Å"mexicaness. † A democracy requires a sense of strength as a people. One of the most famous lines from American democracy is â€Å"a government of the people, by the people, for the people. † Mexico does not have a government that they see in these terms. The continued struggle to gain land rights and justice in the Mexican system does not allow the citizenry to feel a part of their own country and government. The late 20th Century allowed for further economic growth, but governmental policy did not allow for the social structure to continue a growing democracy. Corruption has continued to plague Mexican politics leading citizens to distrust elections. The resent elections in Mexico have been as widely criticized as the elections of the early part of the century. Mexico continues to have a strict class system, uneducated indigenous people and cultural separation. Democ racy will continue to struggle to grow in a rocky environment until Mexico builds the social structure to support an educated society with further cohesion as a people.

Topic Essay

When it comes to gay marriage am fine with it because everybody has equal rights in Georgia. Think with people not being able to marry their same sex is taking their equal rights away from them. That is not fair for their equal rights to be taken away because they like what they like. Yeah, you might not like gay marriage together but me on the other hand as long as they are happy with their life and getting treated the way they should then why does it matter what everybody else thinks. I look at it if you are happy with who you are with you, should be able to marry them no matter what.Even if they are the same ex as you. Just because you do not want gays to get married in Georgia does not mean you have to take their rights from them that is wrong on so many levels. â€Å"Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. † â€Å"They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriag e and at its dissolution. † Taking away their equal rights is not fair for them just because you do not want gay marriage to be legalized. Some people say gay marriage is bad for you.You cannot help who you like or if you like the same ex as yourself. It is just a feeling you get when you are with that person. I have a couple of gay friends and they have told me that it was just a feeling they got when they see that guy they are now head over heels for. Of course, they tried to go back to liking their opposite sex but they never could because they said â€Å"l am not as happy as I was when was with him or I get treated better with him. † When it comes right down to people cannot really control who they like. Some people just get those feelings and they cannot control the feeling they get. That is just making the homosexuals suffer because the linings they get from the same sex as them. I just think if you love the person and that is who you want to be with, why does it m atters what color or if they are the same sex as you. Feelings play a big part in your life and if you are not carefully you can just hurt yourself in the long run. I bet gays in this world we live in are probably wishing dang I wish could control my feelings, so I will not have to struggle getting gay marriage legalized. You should be able to go out and get married and express your feelings with your love ones without having to have a debate with someone. One of the major excuses we have n Georgia is people not being able to express themselves or who they like without being judged for it. I think it is bad people do not feel comfortable going out in public with their loved one that is the same sex as them because they feel like people will judge them and think of them differently. Yeah currently at this time if you go out with the same sex in public you will get judged for it and get called ugly names.Maybe if they would legalize gay marriage in Georgia then they would actually feel comfortable going out in public. Being able to express yourself and love who you love in Georgia would aka gays life a little easier. I am sure not every person agrees with gay marriage but the people that do not agree with it do not know what they are putting the homosexuals through because they do not want it legalized in Georgia. That would be like telling a man no you cannot marry that women even if you love her so much. How would that make you feel?I am almost 100 percent that you would not like that. Then why would you make the gays suffer and not be able to express themselves like you and the women you loved. Gay marriage should be legalized in the State of Georgia. Everybody would be able to express themselves without being judge. The biggest thing that kills me right not with gay marriage being illegal is that you are talking away their equal rights from them. Legalizing gay marriage would just make everybody life easier and be able to express themselves however they choos e to do so. Kook as gay marriage the same as marriage beside the fact you are dating the same sex, they are both happy and love each other so why does it even matter. My main thing is why make someone else unhappy because you do not believe in gay marriage just suck it up because they have struggled ay more than what you have because they are trying to fight for what they love and you are taking that from them. Gay marriage is just another thing in Georgia that needs to be legalized and will pretty soon be legalized believe.

Ap American Dbq

There was a change, not a reformulation regarding political ideas and the ideas of the American Constitution that were part of the decision made by Jackson. Before Jackson the Native Americans were allowed their land but Jackson changed this policy for a racist agenda. The Indian Removal Act Of 1830, which evicted the Native Americans, was a change that had not been in place with the Native Americans before (Docs. A, H). The treaties brought about no benefit. Before Jacksons administration there had been agreements made between the Cherokees and the federal government (Doc. E).Jackson changed the idea of having treaties by saying the treaties with Indians are an absurdity (Doc. H). Instead of compromise Jackson wanted domination, a clear change in policy. The Intercourse Act, a constitutional law, protected the rights of the Indians (Doc. D). In the case of Cherokee Nation V. Georgia the Cherokees lost the case and therefore lost their protection. However, it can be argued that even if the Cherokees had won the case, Jackson still would have removed them from their land. Jackson had no respect for John Marshals decisions and, therefore, showed little respect for the Constitution. The Native Americans were no way a threat to the U. S. , nor were they savages. They were like the Americans in that they owned nice houses (Doc. L), were educated, farmed, many were Christian, and some were slave owners. Their constitutional republic was even modeled after the United States. John C. Calhoun even wrote in a letter to Henry Clay in 1820, he said that the Native tribes appear to be making gradual advances in industry and civilization (Doc. J). From the beginning of the United States, Native Americans were given rights to act as independent nations, and those rights were to be respected by following the Constitution. For example, Henry Knox, the Secretary of War in 1 789, wrote to President George Washington, The Indians, being the prior occupants, possess the right of the soil. It cannot be taken from them unless by their free consent, or by the right of conquest in case of a just war, (Document B). Because of this, the LIST allowed the Natives on American land their independent nations as they were the prior occupants, and their land shouldve never be taken unless they agreed to it or they were to lose it in a war. Although the united States policy sounded fair, for many years, the Natives were intentionally tricked into treaties that gave up huge amount of territory to the whites. Jacksons administrations decision to remove the Cherokee Indians was a change encompassing moral, political, constitutional, and practical changes, disregarding prior administrations concerns for his personal agenda. He passed the Indian Removal Act of 1 830 which evicted the Native Americans from their land, which angered them and could have brought about fighting. The Indians were further irritated when they tried to sue in Federal Court but were denied in Cherokee Nation Vs.. Georgia. They were more satisfied when they won the Worcester vs. . Georgia case. The Native Americans were at peace with the prior Administration and were happy with their land. When Jackson took office, the Native Americans were forced to move out of their homeland to lands west of the Mississippi, which was not something that would have been done in the previous administrations.

Beautiful Minds Movie project HRM 511 Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Beautiful Minds project HRM 511 - Movie Review Example The movie further shows how love can win misunderstanding (Goldsman & Nasar, 2002). However, the characters in the story wanted to show the course of admiration and that a disorder is not a barrier to a healthy existence. A Beautiful Mind shows a lot of effectiveness and esthetic beauty from the way the stage director has arranged the work. It must have a strong opening that evokes the emotion of the audience (Indick, 2004). Another element that we expect in dramaturgy is how the art is presented, how the directors capture the turning point and bringing out the climax. Nash suffers a lot because of the false impression that many at times take control of his life. It is evident in the story that during the time when Nash is in a state of delusion, he sees imaginary things, for instance, his comrade, Charles. The movie addresses the state of delusion that Nash is in at any time. The video controller creates a scenario where Charles is brought out as a real person greeting Nash at his time of joining the university. However, the state of delusion that Nash at times fi nds himself in is not a conscious occurrence (Goldsman & Nasar, 2002). At times, Nash gets into a state that the ego part of his mind takes control, for instance when his wife, Alicia decides to leave him he goes and stands in front of the car. That is a behavior that can only be seen in a child. The major problem in the case of Nash is that he is unable to draw a line between veracity and delusion. Due to the mental problem with Nash, he is not able to control his moods and attitude because it keeps on changing from intelligence to absolute stupidity. Therefore, there is a competing conflict between emotions and behaviors and attitudes. It is the conscious part of mind that directs the attitude and behavior, however, when there is short of the brain control system

Nutrition low income diet plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Nutrition low income diet plan - Essay Example The protein and carbohydrate requirement were at par to RNI and DRV values, though carbohydrates were less in terms of RNI. Unfortunately the fat rich foods were purchased less. Although the fat requirement of 35% was obeyed but there was disparity in intake of trans fatty acids, saturated fatty acids and mono-unsaturated fatty acids. This could lead to impairment of transport and absorption of vitamins, less available energy for heavy endurance work, and decreased feeling of satiety. After reorienting her purchase by reducing 1 avocado, white wine and replacing with 12 more French dressings in her diet will not only address the issue of meeting RNI and DRV of fats but will also reduce her expenses by 0.32 pounds and her new expenditure will be 23.3pound/week. This indicates that she will be able to live on a 30 pound weekly income. Introduction Diet Charts are essential to indicate the amount or portions of the various food items that one should consume in the entire day to meet the daily calorie requirements. Calorie requirement depends on the gender of the individual, the type of daily activity undertaken, profession of the individual, specific disease states, and specific clinical conditions like pregnancy, lactation ( Darnton-Hill, Nishida and James,2004:101-121). Diet charts also need to be formulated based on the socioeconomic conditions of the individual and hence there cannot be a concept of universal diet chart (Barker, 2002:17). Calorie requirements are based on the concept of Balanced Diet. A Balanced Diet is one which contains all the necessary macro and micronutrients comprising of carbohydrates, fats and proteins including vitamins and trace elements to meet the daily calorie need of an individual, so that the individual can maintain his or her daily activities and at the same time keeping a good health and preventing the chance of diseases by building body immunity. The calorie requirements of an individual are expressed in the form of Adult Con sumption Units. Adult Consumption Unit expresses the calorie requirement of a person in reference to the average calorie requirement of a reference man, which is normal sedentary adult man. The calorie requirement normally considered at an average of 2400kcal. The different ACU speculated are: The calories are provided by carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Dietary carbohydrates serves the principle source of energy, acts as protein sparers, as metabolic primers for protein and fat metabolisms and also forms the fuel of the Central Nervous system (Lippard and Berg, 1994).50-60% of total calories should come from carbohydrates (McArdle, Katch, and Katch ,2006). The calorific value of carbohydrates is 4.1kcal/gram (Kathleen Mahan, Raymond and Escott-Stump, 2012). Fats are required to supply the required amount of essential fatty acids, to act as dietary vehicles for transport and absorption of vitamins, provide high percentage of energy for heavy endurance work, to bring satiety (Haque and Mozaffar,1992:1351-4). Fat requirement increases with the rise in total calorie requirement because fat have a high calorie value around 9.1 kcal/gram, which is more than proteins or carbohydrates (Berg , Tymoczko, and Stryer 2002:603). The calorific values of proteins are 4.1kcal/gram. A protein containing adequate and balanced amounts of essential amino acids has high nutritive value because its amino acids are promptly incorporated into

Examine the consequences of the establishment of a system of universal Research Paper

Examine the consequences of the establishment of a system of universal health care - Research Paper Example Nevertheless, there are difficulties ahead. There are two ways to implement a program of universal healthcare. The first is to have the government pay for all necessary healthcare expenses as is done in Canada. This is sometimes called the single payer method. Healthcare is centrally rationed and is available to all by dint of citizenship or residency. This is a good method of delivering the service—even if it is very expensive—but it is hard to implement in a highly developed economy such as the United States'. The second method is to force insurance companies to insure everyone. Normally, insurers don't like people who have preexisting conditions which make them risky. The government can create laws that force them to offer insurance anyway. Usually, the insurers will receive a subsidy to help them out. Before Obamacare passed, many liberals sought a pure public option. But is a public option such a great step forward? With the cost of healthcare rapidly accelerating, it may be too taxing for many countries to implement. Even in Canada, there is an increasing movement towards private clinics (Kraus).

History and Impact of Computing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

History and Impact of Computing - Essay Example Its formation was intrigued by the demand for work force by the 100th battalion war department. Recruitment of the military personnel involved both Americans and Japanese volunteers. Though 2100 Japanese were recruited, they felt that the unit that was created was a strategy by the white military to protect themselves. In addition, their reluctance to join the army was because the elegance forms required the Japanese to denounce their nationality. In regards to this, most Japanese youth felt that it was an insult to their emperor (Black, 2001). The Caucasians held the official position in the regiments. The group participated in several wars such as the wars at Luciana, Belvedere, and Livorno. The casualty percentage of Japanese-American units was rated at 314 percent. Recognition for the lost lives of the volunteers was made through awards for their courage and bravery in the battlefields. Just like the African-Americans dedication in the Second World War, President Truman honored t he Japanese-Americans for their devotion to wars in Italy and Southern France. The Armed Forces was desegregated in order to allow equality and fare enrolment. The success of the war was ascribed to role the Japanese Americans played. More importantly was the war against Japan where they acted as translators and interpreters. Their service in the Military Intelligence Service was manifested in their ability to capture Japanese secret communication thus making orders to Japanese officers and quick elucidations of their enemies’ military communication code. Their involvement was significantly felt at Saipan and Okinawa. They calmed down terrified civilians due to the terror threats that were propagated by their Japanese government. They also convinced some Japanese soldiers until they surrendered (Black, 2001). Despite the 442nd impeccable service that earned the rest of Japanese-soldiers respect, the West Coast perceptions of these soldiers were different from that accorded to the Americans soldiers. Though the 442nd regiment survivors had earned the country victory in the wars, they were reunited with their families who had been placed in isolation camps. Similarly, the Japanese war veterans were harshly treated in their homes. Their residents were constantly set a blaze or vandalized and most restaurants and local shops dined offering their services to them. Though some soldiers were disbanded from wars during Italy’s post-war occupation duty due to their Japanese ancestry, President Harry Truman honored their efforts by pinning the seventh Presidential Unit Citation on the 442nd unit’s color. The reactivation of 442nd regiment unit in Hawaii following its inactivation in Honolulu proved the unit as an organized reserve unit. The recent recognition of the Asian Pacific Americans veterans of the U.S Army Second World War was held on 21 day of June in 2000. The move was an effort towards correction of the racial prejudice that had character ized United States during WWII. In regards to this recognition, the 442nd Japanese infantry earned twenty-one medals. The American Navajo Code Talkers During World War II, which started from 1939 to1945, approximately 50,000 New Mexicans were involved in almost every assault the United States marine forces raged on areas such as Peleju, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal in the

Personal consumption journal Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Personal consumption journal - Assignment Example I also use much carbon footprint and if I choose energy efficient appliances, walk, use bikes or take public transit where possible, use greener electricity that is electricity generated by wind/solar for a smaller rate surcharge it will reduce (Bishop, p 12). If I can obtain most of my food from local farmers markets, gardens, cooperatives and other local and fresh sources for all my food since they haven’t travelled long distances to reach me and therefore no loss of energy in transportation , choose food with less packaging to reduce waste, eat food chains going meat less for just a week and make a difference in consumer estimation since it contributes much to emission of green gas hence global warming it would reduce much my food footprint to a level lower than 9.57gha as compared to the country’s average which is 9.58 gha . My goods and services footprint is also higher than the country’s average and this is because I frequently replace belongings even if they are in good conditions, this can be reduced by replacing only when there’s need to, also I should select items labeled as recycled, natural/organic when buying new clothes and paper products and this would reduce the amount much, recycle my aluminum, glass and plastic, compost food waste for the garden. I think my foot print is too much as compared to an individual living in a less developed part of the world since am more exposed to factors leading to this .This changes the way I view my way of living and am so willing to change by adopting sustainable practices that reduce my footprint while building our economy. This I will also do by encouraging my friends and my community and to do the same. In one week I threw used one used newspaper paper, two glass soda bottles, one aluminum can, three plastic bottles, two plastic tins, three plastic bags, food scraps, leaves, animal manure and five old clothes. Am surprised I threw so much that could be composted and recycled! Throwing

Drugs and Crime- The Media's Influence-repost Personal Statement

Drugs and Crime- The Media's Influence-repost - Personal Statement Example According to Morgan, the freedom of media need regulation in order to meet the needs of the citizenry, which requires impartial, justice and fairness (46). The misrepresentation of facts is a crime and the media should be accountable for false information. This is because the misrepresentation of facts is a civil misdeed, which may lead to defamation and other damages on the part of the defendant. The media should discourage drugs, instead of the media applying double standards in a bid to save the image of celebrities like Bieber. The media should take the initiative to enlighten the public, especially the youth, on the side effects of misuse of drugs. This will serve as a deterrent measure of the prevalence of drug misuse, which leads to road carnage and other social evils. The media can make use of advertisements and other form of media outlets in the dissemination of information on the effects of misuse of drugs (Morgan 67). Information is power and it can help the decision making process of the vulnerable populace especially the youth population. The media should not be allowed to be part of any criminal proceedings with regard to drugs and crime. This will ensure that justice is administered without undue

Unemployment Rate or GDP OR CPI Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Unemployment Rate or GDP OR CPI - Research Paper Example Thus, since GDP is a full representation of economic growth and production, it has a relatively large impact on nearly every aspect in the economy. When a certain economy is considered healthy, there are a number of related characteristics; low rate of unemployment and an increase in the level of wages as many businesses demand more labor in order to cater for the ever growing economy (Brezina, 20). Any slight change in the level of GDP is significant to a given economy since it affects the entire stock market. Economists have always argued that any bad economy is always associated with lower profits which implies that there are lower prices o stock in the markets. Thus, many investors in any economy will ever worry about the negative growth of GDP as it is a sole factor used to determine if an economy is on recession or not. A recession is associated with declining revenues in businesses, unemployment and layoffs (Lochner, 3). Moreover, when the growth rate of GDP is relatively fast, most Federal Reserve raise the rates of interest in order to stem inflation or rather the increasing prices in an economy. This could imply that the loans which are meant for homes and cars will become more expensive and thus businesses will experience high cost of borrowing. GDP is an extremely important measure in any country’s economy. Despite the fact that GDP cannot be easily determined, its value represents so many aspects in any given economy. This measure is significant to overall spending of a nation since depressions and recessions of a particular country are largely caused by the overall rate of spending. Furthermore, GDP is a measure of confidence since when the government, companies and individuals spend; it is a likely indication of a growing economy. However, when no one is spending, it is a likely indication of a contracting economy. Therefore, this

Bruce Dawes poems Essay Example for Free

Bruce Dawes poems Essay Bruce Dawes poems explore the impacts of consumer culture and are an indictment of the growing materialism in modern society. In Enter Without So Much As Knocking (1962), Dawe portrays a world dominated by consumerism, which has lead to `conformity, and eroded the individuality of many people. The idea that our view of the world can only be seen through television and that our experience of life is restricted and controlled by it is highlighted in the satirical poem, Tele Vistas.(1977) This idea is revisited in The Not So Good Earth. (1966) Television in consumer society is the prime source of information and entertainment. Dawe expresses his concern that we have become desensitized to human suffering because it is presented to us as entertainment. The central message of the satirical poem Enter Without So Much As Knocking by Bruce Dawe is that â€Å"you are dust and unto dust you shall return†. Dawe’s biblical allusion emphasizes that it doesn’t matter how many consumer items and materialistic things are bought, everybody ends up the same way, back to dust again. Society is portrayed as the product of the consumer age and human life is determined as a by-product, lacking in real value and soon rendered obsolete. Dawe suggests that contemporary society is false and superficial. The intertextual reference to Bobby Dazzler epitomizes this: an empty smile behind the welcoming faà §ade reinforced through the superficial clichà © â€Å"all you lucky people† undercut by Dawe’s mocking tone in â€Å"and he really was lucky because it didn’t mean a thing to him†. The family is defined in terms of what they look like in advertising jargon: the mother is economy size. Consumerism now defines identity or lack of individuality. This brings the idea that in order to belong to a consumer based society, the individual must conform. This idea is reinforced through negative listing in â€Å"he was old enough to be realistic like every other godless money-hungry back-stabbing miserable so-and-so†. The derogatory labeling is a clichà ©d reference to the gossiping and derisive comments that characterize the materialistic culture Dawe is criticizing in his poem. Tele vistas (1977) is another satirical poem where humans are identified on the terms of brand names of communication companies, â€Å" Sanyo-orientated, Rank-Arena bred†. This use of metaphor reinforces how identity is shaped by  consumer culture – their character/personalization is determined by their choice of technology. The modern god is television and its viewing content is being satirized heavily by Dawe. This poem thoroughly ridicules the dominance of television media in our lives. Reality is defined by media constructs – relationships and human conversation comes second. Through Dawe’s indictment of consumer culture, he raises the issue that modern society lacks identity, individuality and purpose and that contemporary Australians are typically co-dependent on television for basic human interaction, †a faulty tube led to their meeting†. The romantic cliche’s juxtaposed with references to television suggest that the relationship of the couple would not have occurred without TV. The demise of the relationship is foreshadowed through the juxtaposition of ‘ever-faithful’ with an alliterative metaphoric reference to ‘’World at War’ in the final lines of the poem. Dawe suggests that relationships built on shared consumerism are ultimately shallow and unstable. The Not So Good Earth, like Tele Vistas, is centered on the commonplace activity of watching television. Dawe expresses his concern that individuals have become desensitized to human suffering because it is presented as entertainment. Vivid imagery of human suffering is juxtaposed with the upbeat tone to describe the satisfaction achieved by a good quality picture. This is made evident through the phrase, â€Å"using the contrast knob to bring them up dark, all those screaming faces†. Life footage is depicted as a product like a movie to be judged on its value to the consumer through, â€Å"on the quieter parts where theyre just starving away†. It is a very satirical poem that creates black humor. Through the characters complete insensitivity and absence of either empathy or sympathy, Dawe expresses amazement at the complacency of people in our society. A metaphoric and satirical reference is made by the poet commenting on the destruction of less privileged communities â€Å"We never did find out how it finished up Dad at this stage tripped over the main lead in the dark, hauling the whole set down smack on its inscrutable face, 600 million Chinese without a trace†. The light tone that focuses on the loss of the TV trivializes the loss of life referred to in these lines. By adopting the voice of a consumer Dawe parodies consumer culture and exposes the insensitivity that accompanies  shallow materialistic values. Enter Without So Much As Knocking (1962)outlines how consumer culture has eroded the individuality of people. This is also evident in Tele Vistas (1977) as Dawe portrays that life can only be seen through a television screen, not through common encounters. The Not So Good Earth (1966)is a very satirical poem that creates black humor through the idea that society has become desensitized to human suffering due to consumerism.

Old Testament Leadership Essay Example for Free

Old Testament Leadership Essay Introduction The Holy Scriptures are without question a vault of rich wisdom for a variety of subjects. The subject of leadership is no different; in fact a case can perhaps be made that the Holy Scriptures are word pictures of God’s leadership for humankind. Whether it is read as the divinely, inspired word of God, or as a mere historical account of ancient Israel, or as a book of pure myths, the reader will encounter fascinating people with extraordinary leadership qualities. The following will take a glimpse at Moses; the man whom God chose to be the leader of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt, into a land that flowed with milk and honey. The following will be an attempt to document moments of strength, weakness, failure, and victory. This paper will conclude by identifying Moses as a servant leader who, in spite of human failure, ultimately fulfilled the will and purpose of God. Leadership Style The style of leadership that Moses demonstrated was clearly Servant leadership, â€Å"In order to retain the potential in this young man, God led him into the Midian desert to learn a new way of life† (Kuest, 2009). As a shepherd he learned to serve, and became servant to the purpose and will of God. Relationships Moses although he spent much time on Mount Sinai (in relationship with God), he also spent time with his successor Joshua whom he had prepared for Servant Leadership (Num. 11:28). Incarnation Moses was not a detached leader. In fact throughout the wilderness journey, he was among the people. He was an accessible leader. Evidence of this fact is found when there were needs the people went straight to him (Num. 20:1-13). Covenants OLD TESTAMENT LEADERSHIP 3 Moses was perhaps known for many things; in fact it is widely known that Moses is regarded as one of the Jewish people’s greatest prophets/leaders. One specific thing that Moses is known for is the Mosaic Covenant. The bible states â€Å"If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priest and a holy nation† (Ex. 19:5-6). Moses In spite of his greatness, Moses was a man with weaknesses. As the time when he was supposed to speak to the rock but instead hit the rock, thus failed to do what he was instructed to do. Moses over saw victories, and uprisings by his own people, however, through it all he was the man whom God had called and he was servant to that calling. Conclusion Perhaps his greatest strength was his relationship with God, the time that he spent in the presence of the Almighty God had to be his constant reminder that what he was doing was greater than himself. Moses’s weakness and failure did not hinder him from desiring to see God’s glory, these experiences on the mountain top made him who he was. OLD TESTAMENT LEADERSHIP 4 References Kuest, R. (2009). Variety of actions are included in the marketing plan so every action takes much time to cover all the issues, for example situation analysis, SWOT analysis, marketing objectives and issues, marketing strategy, action items, financial budgets and forecasts, controls etc. Marketing strategy is the base of a well written plan. In this Essay I am going to discuss on PepsiCos marketing plan specially what methods and actions can boost up PepsiCo products while its competitor Coca Cola selling products frequently in the market and its marketing technique is more powerful rather than PepsiCo. In short the main purpose of marketing plan is boost your companies sale, create a centre of attention to new customers and maintain old customers using the latest marketing trends. There are several declining products in the market. Marketing is a big factor in the promotion of any product. I have seen an example in Pakistan there one company was advertised on television before to launch their product in the market. Infact that was advertisement of milk, a blank white paper box was in the advertisement and it was showing that something is coming. After few days they played their final advertisement with the proper product name and finally they launched their product in the market. There are already running milk products like Nestle, Haleeb but this new product was Olpers tetra pack milk. In short its very difficult to launch a new product in the market if you have not advertise through any media. The first benefit of advertised product is that people demand product by itself and stockers and suppliers providing products on public demand rather than a non advertised product difficult to sale and shopkeepers and customers are not easily agree to buy that product, a lot of effort is require to sale new product in the market without advertisement. History of PepsiCo In 1883 Pepsi was introduced by Caleb Braham. Pepsis first name when it was launched Brads Drink in New Bern, North Carolina. Caleb Braham who made Pepsi at his pharmacy where the drink was sold. Later Brads Drink changed into Pepsi Cola. The digestive enzyme pepsin and kola nuts used in the recipe. Celeb Braham sought to create a fountain drink that was delicious and would aid in digestion and boost energy. Pepsi was launched after Coca Cola or coke. It was cheaper than Coca Cola when it was launched initially, at that it was popular as poor mans cola. After that Pepsi was taken a good marketing strategy that in the advertisement Pepsi employed to celebrities. First celebrity was Barney Oldfield, the pioneer for automobile racing. Sodas are most frequently used items. Mostly sodas are delicious, they stand between liquor and juice. Those who are too young to drink beer but think fruit juice is too juvenile can order sodas. Those too old and are putting their health at risk by drinking hard drinks can enjoy soft drinks and no one would think any less of them. Sodas have a mass appeal therefore people most demand it, especially in the summer season when you feel thrust often people demand cold soda for kill thrust. In 1903, Bradham moved the bottling of Pepsi-Cola from his drugstore to a rented warehouse. That year, Bradham sold 7,968 gallons of  syrup. The next year, Pepsi was sold in six-ounce bottles, and sales increased to 19,848 gallons. In 1909, automobile race pioneer  Barney Oldfield  was the first celebrity to endorse Pepsi-Cola, describing it as A bully drinkrefreshing, invigorating, a fine bracer before a race. The advertising theme Delicious and Healthful was then used over the next two decades. In 1926, Pepsi received its first logo redesign since the original design of 1905. In 1929, the logo was changed again. In 1931, at the depth of the  Great Depression, the Pepsi-Cola Company entered bankruptcy in large part due to financial losses incurred by speculating on wildly fluctuating sugar prices as a result of  World War I. Assets were sold and Roy C. Megargel bought the Pepsi trademark. Eight years later, the company went bankrupt again. Pepsis assets were then purchased by  Charles Guth, the President of Loft Inc. Loft was a candy manufacturer with retail stores that contained soda fountains. He sought to replace  Coca-Cola  at his stores fountains after Coke refused to give him a discount on syrup. Guth then had Lofts chemists reformulate the Pepsi-Cola syrup formula. On three separate occasions between 1922 and 1933, the Coca-Cola Company was offered the opportunity to purchase the Pepsi-Cola company and it declined on each occasion. In 1965, Pepsi employed another marketing strategy which was company expansion. They merged with Frito-Lay, the most popular snack brand in the world. PepsiCo was formed. Pepsi took care of the beverages while Frito-lay manned the snacks. In 1966, PepsiCo settled into the Eastern European and Japanese markets. They also introduced new products; Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Here below I am showing the most popular brands that are available at different location of the world. Pepsis Most popular products and brands: (Something for everyone) Question 1: Produce a Marketing Plan Write a marketing plan for the declining product you have analyzed using an appropriate framework. Situation Analysis Company Analysis Company gaining profit day by day. It is the second most demanded soda drink company in the whole world. Pepsi launched some new products in the market and increased its sale and annual profit. Problem is there, people are not fully aware about new products and new products are not present in all locations therefore there is need to provide new products on all locations. Especially in Asian countries like Pakistan and India all products of PepsiCo are not available. PepsiCo sells three products through the same distribution channel.   For example, combining the production capabilities of Pepsi, Gatorade and Tropicana is a big opportunity to reduce costs, improve efficiency and smooth out the impact of seasonal fluctuations in demand for particular product. Weaknesses: Pepsi hard to inspire vision and direction for large global company. Not all PepsiCo products bear the company name. PepsiCo is far away from leader Coca-cola in the international market demand is highly elastic. Sex appeal: Sex appeal is not only an attention getter with the current generation, but is also becoming more socially acceptable in the advertising directed toward them. Competitor Analysis: Market Position Coca Cola is number one cola product in all over the world. Coca Colas marketing strategy is most powerful and effective. Maximum market coverage has been done by Coca Cola. Its the result that its annual sale and profit is more than PepsiCo. Strengths Coca-Cola has strong brand recognition across the globe. The company has a leading brand value and a strong brand portfolio. Business-Week and Interbrand, a branding consultancy, recognize. Coca-Cola as one of the leading brands in their top 100 global brands ranking in 2006.The Business Week-Interbrand valued Coca-Cola at $67,000 million in 2006. Coca-Cola ranks well ahead of its close competitor Pepsi which has a ranking of 22 having a brand value of $12,690 million Furthermore, Coca-Cola owns a large portfolio of product brands. The company owns four of the top five soft drink brands in the world: Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta. Strong brands allow the company to introduce brand extensions such as Vanilla Coke, Cherry Coke and Coke with Lemon. Over the years, the company has made large investments in brand promotions. Consequently, Coca-cola is one of the best recognized global brands. The companys strong brand value facilitates customer recall and allows Coca-Cola to pene trate new markets and consolidate existing ones. Weakness Negative publicity: The company received negative publicity in India during September 2006.The company was accused by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) of selling products containing pesticide residues. Coca-Cola products sold in and around the Indian national capital region contained a hazardous pesticide residue. These pesticides included chemicals which could cause cancers, damage the nervous and reproductive systems and reduce bone mineral density. Such negative publicity could adversely impact the companys brand image and the demand for Coca-Cola products. This could also have an adverse impact on the companys growth prospects in the international markets. Sluggish performance in North America Coca-Colas performance in North America was far from robust. North America is Coca-Colascore market generating about 30% of total revenues during fiscal 2006. Therefore, a strong performance in North America is important for the company. North America the sale of unit cases did not record any growth. Unit case retail volume in North America decreased 1% primarily due to weak sparkling beverage trends in the second half of 2006 and decline in the warehouse-delivered water and juice businesses. Moreover, the company also expects performance in North America to be weak during 2007. Sluggish performance in North America could impact the companys future growth prospects and prevent Coca-Cola from recording a more robust top-line growth. Decline in cash from operating activities The companys cash flow from operating activities declined during fiscal 2006. Cash flows from operating activities decreased 7% in 2006 compared to 2005. Net cash provided by operating activities reached $5,957 million in 2006, from $6,423 million in 2005. Coca-Colas cash flows from operating activities in 2006 also decreased compared with 2005 as a result of a contribution of approximately $216 million to a tax-qualified trust to fund retiree medical benefits. The decrease was also the result of certain marketing accruals recorded in 2005. Merger of Quaker Oats produced synergy across the board. Record revenues and increasing market share. Lack of capital constraints (availability of large free cash flow). Great brands, strong distribution, innovative capabilities   Number one maker of snacks, such as corn chips and potato chips PepsiCo sells three products through the same distribution channel.   For example, combining the production capabilities of Pepsi, Gatorade and Tropicana is a big opportunity to reduce costs, improve efficiency and smooth out the impact of seasonal fluctuations in demand for particular product. Weakness Pepsi hard to inspire vision and direction for large global company. Not all PepsiCo products bear the company name. PepsiCo is far away from leader Coca-cola in the international market demand is highly elastic. Opportunity Food division should expand internationally. Noncarbonated drinks are the fastest-growing part of the industry There are increasing trend toward healthy foods   Focus on most important customer trend Convenience. Threats FB industry is mature. Pepsi is blamed for pesticide residues in their products in one of their most promising emerging market e.g in India. Over 50 percent of the companys sales come from Frito-Lay; this is a threat if the market takes a downturn. PepsiCo now competes with Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola, and Kraft foods (because of broader product line) which are well-run and financially sound competitors.   Size of company will demand a varied marketing program; Social, cultural, economic, political and governmental constrains. Strategies The purpose of the strategy is to increase the EPS by 15% per annum and increase PepsiCos stock price. There are two ways to increase the EPS, first is to increase the income and second to decrease the amount of stocks outstanding. To increase the income, there are Bases for Consumer Market Segmentation There are number of variables involved in  consumer market segmentation, alone and in combination. These variables are: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Geographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Demographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Psychographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Behavioral variables Geographic Segmentation In geographical segmentation, market is divided into different geographical units like: Regions (by country, nation, state, neighborhood) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Population Density (Urban, suburban, rural) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ City size (Size of area, population size and growth rate) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Climate (Regions having similar climate pattern) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Regions (by country, nation, state, neighborhood) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Population Density (Urban, suburban, rural) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ City size (Size of area, population size and growth rate) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Climate (Regions having similar climate pattern) A company, either serving a few or all geographic segments, needs to put attention on variability of geographic needs and wants. After segmenting consumer market on geographic bases, companies localize their marketing efforts (product, advertising, promotion and sales efforts). Demographic Segmentation In demographic segmentation, market is divided into small segments based on demographic variables like: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Age à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Gender à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Income à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Occupation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Education à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Social Class à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Generation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Family size à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Family life cycle à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Home Ownership à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Religion à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Ethnic group/Race à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Nationality Demographic factors are most important factors for segmenting the customers groups. Consumer needs, wants, usage rate these all depend upon demographic variables. So, considering demographic factors, while defining marketing strategy, is crucial. Psychographic Segmentation In Psychographic Segmentation, segments are defined on the basis of social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics. Psychographic variables include: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Interests à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Opinions à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Personality à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Self Image à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Activities à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Values à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Attitudes A segment having demographically grouped consumers may have different psychographic characteristics. Behavioral Segmentation In this segmentation market is divided into segments based on consumer knowledge, attitude, use or response to product. Behavioral variables include: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Usage Rate à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Product benefits à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Brand Loyalty à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Price Consciousness à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Occasions (holidays like mothers day, New Year and Eid) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ User Status (First Time, Regular or Potential) Behavioral segmentation is considered most favorable segmentation tool as it uses those variables that are closely related to the product itself. Bases for Business Market Segmentation Business market can be segmented on the bases consumer market variables but because of many inherent differences like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Businesses are few but purchase in bulk à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Evaluate in depth à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Joint decisions are made Business market might be segmented on the bases of following variables: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Company Size: what company sizes should we serve? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Industry: Which industry to serve? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Purchasing approaches: Purchasing-function organization, Nature of existing relationships, purchase policies and criteria. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Situational factors: seasonal trend, urgency: should serve companies needing quick order deliver, Order: focus on large orders or small. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Geographic: Regional industrial growth rate, Customer concentration, and international macroeconomic factors Marketing Mix Price, Place, Product and Promotion Remember that you are working with an existing company that has set objectives and missions. You will need to align your product to the companys objectives. Please be sure to include a sample of advertising (using a medium or media of your choice) which supports your plan. Sponsoring to different charity shows, arranging different musical concerts sponsor by Pepsi, awarding shows like best performance awards to different actors sponsor by Pepsi. It gives good impact on the peoples mind. I often seen that some cricket matches or sports sponsored by the Pepsi. Lot of ways which you can boost your product and give challenge to your competitor. In short I would like to give preference to advertise by media, because media is now everywhere, TV channels, Radios, Newspapers, Magazines and much more. YouTube is big bank and now few advertisement are on YouTube. Pepsi needs to introduce some of its new products and their advertisement on YouTube. Last night I listen some famous songs on YouTube and before to start song an advertisement of company was there, like Cashforphones.co.uk advertisement was on YouTube. Everyone is not visiting Pepsis website and everyone is not fully aware with the Pepsis products. Therefore there is need to give awareness to people during their activities, like during watching TV or sitting on internet, means we need to find the things in which people most frequently come and use and there we need to give advertisement of products. After get awareness of products people will automatically demand on selling points that we need Pepsis products. Retailers, wholesalers and everyone (supply chain) will maintain that new products at their locations because of public demand of that product. Conclusion The Pepsi-Cola drink was invented in 1898 and grew basically by following the Coca-Cola marketing, product, and distribution strategies. Like Coca-Cola it advertised as heavily as finances permitted, and was distributed through soda fountains and franchised bottlers. Assessing Pepsis marketing strategies; It is clear that Pepsi has made several right choices. With the existence of Coke, Pepsi took advantage of their late entry into the market by lowering their prices. Before it entered the international market, it first familiarized its customers with its product thoroughly in its home base. By the time Pepsi was ready to enter the international market, it had a good grasp of what its target audience really is. In conclusion, Pepsis marketing strategies, from past to present included: enhancing their distribution system, knowing the environment of the foreign market and finding the things their target buyers had in common, adding new innovations and products while improving the old products, imaginative advertising, use of advanced technology, assertive promotions , trendy, socially-aware campaigns, alliances with major corporations and expansion into other industries such as restaurants. Even Pepsis response. So, n effect , Coca- Colas massive fame has also rubbed off on its rival. It even isolated these two beverage companies from other soft drink brands.

Thomas More’s Utopia and Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World :: Utopia Essays

Thomas More’s Utopia and Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World , are novels about societies that differ from our own. Though the two authors have chosen different approaches to create an alternate society, both books have similarities which represent the visions of men who were moved to great indignation by the societies in which they lived. Both novels have transcended contemporary problems in society , they both have a structured, work based civilization and both have separated themselves from the ways of past society. It is important when reading these novels to focus on the differences as well as the similarities. The two novels differ in their views of love, religion, and the way to eliminate social classes. These differences seem to suggest that if we do not come closer to More’s goal in Utopia, we will end up in a society much like that of Huxley’s Brave New World. Thomas More’s Utopia, is a small island where there is no greed or crime. The inhabitants of this island live as equals, no one does more work than another person and everyone feels secure with their place in society. By abolishing money and private property, More would rid society of greed and social ambition. Most of all, he wants to curtail pride, the evil he believes is at the root of all evils -- "the infernal serpent that steals into the hearts of men, thwarting and holding them back from choosing the better way of life." Likewise, in Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World, crime and greed have been eliminated and everybody is satisfied with their social status. This similarity between the two novels suggests that the authors may have seen a link between social status and crime. Indeed, in western civilization, it is evident through statistics that a large amount of crime takes place amongst the lower class. Both authors saw that by eliminating the self pity and jealousy that comes with a lower social status, they would also be eliminating the crime and greed that comes with it. In order to maintain a society free of social inequality both authors set up a civilization based on strict societal structure. In More’s Utopia, a system was set up so that all work was completed.

Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique and Sue Kaufmans Diary of a Mad

Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique and Sue Kaufman's Diary of a Mad Housewife Bettina Balser, the narrator of Sue Kaufman’s Diary of a Mad Housewife, is an attractive, intelligent woman living in an affluent community of New York City with her successful husband and her two charming children. She is also on the verge of insanity. Her various mental disorders, her wavering physical health, and her sexual promiscuity permeate her diary entries, and are interwoven among descriptions of the seemingly normal and easy routine of a housewife. Betty Friedan, in writing the Feminine Mystique, describes the plight of millions of American women directly parallel to that of Bettina’s. Through her exhaustive research and interviews, Friedan documents extensive evidence of the adverse effects of â€Å"Occupation: Housewife.† The women she speaks with are all like Bettina: they lead desirable, healthy lives on the surface, and yet they are slowly deteriorating inside. Friedan discusses the effects of the unnatural and illogical mirage of femininity forced upon women, and analyzes why being just a housewife is not enough. Bettina’s situation will be analyzed through Friedan’s theories on the feminine mystique. Despite her misery, Bettina Balser is quite aware of how blessed she is to have the life of which millions of women can only dream. She begins her diary with a long catalogue of all of the things she should, in all reason, be grateful for: â€Å"Shall I say the obvious, the thing I’ve told myself every day for weeks- that I know I’m a Very Lucky Girl, and really must be crazy to get into the state I’m in these days, when I have everything A Girl Could Want? I have two bright, healthy, attractive children†¦ I have... ...e the nervous tics, the various phobias, the alcoholism, and the insomnia, Bettina survives through to the end of Diary of a Mad Housewife. Bettina made it through ten years of marriage in the inhumanly confining role as a housewife because she was able to hold on to ideas that made her Bettina Balser instead of just a housewife. Bettina is an outstanding woman when compared to the millions of women described by Friedan whose creativity and individuality was wasted on living solely as a wife and mother. However, Bettina also embodies the disastrous effects that the feminine mystique debilitated American women with during the 1950’s, as profoundly described by Betty Friedan in the Feminine Mystique. Analysis of My Big Fat Greek Wedding

During the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, there was a lot of positive and negative communication that influenced the main character’s life decisions. The story is about a young woman, named Toula, that is of Greek decent who is fearful of being stuck in the life she is now living. She is a frumpy girl that works in her family’s restaurant because she has not been able to find a Greek man to marry, and because of this, her family claims that she is old and has failed in life. She is allowed to attend college, which in turn, gives her new confidence and she is able to fall in love with a non-Greek man that is named, Ian.During the movie she struggles to get her family to accept him as the man she loves, and she also finally comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity. At the end of the movie, Ian is accepted into the family, he becomes a baptized Greek, agrees to marry in the Greek Orthodox Church and participate in the Greek culture. Despite the happy ending of the movie, Toula struggled to follow the rules and values of her culture, practiced nonverbal communication with Ian, and received empathy from her mother while Ian had to deal with a language barrier of English and Greek.Toula has a hard time accepting the culture of her family. From the movie, it seems as though the Greek culture is a high context culture. High context cultures have a strong sense of tradition and history, and they do not change much over time. In the beginning of the movie, Toula states that her family expects her to â€Å"marry a Greek boy, make Greek babies, and feed everyone in the family till the day she dies. † Since she has not been married she is stuck working in the family restaurant until she does. She breaks tradition when she starts dating and then marries, Ian, because he is not a â€Å"Greek boy, and not from a Greek family. She also does the unthinkable since she marryed Ian and changes the history and tradition of the culture, as high c ontext cultures do not change over time. It is also a tradition for the Greeks to have big families; Toula explains to Ian that she has twenty-seven first cousins and Ian seems to be very interested in what she is telling him because he only has two cousins. Ian’s family is American and they are the opposite of Toula’s family, they are part of the low context culture, like many other American families. One of the biggest differences is that Toula’s family is loud, big and always together and Ian’s family is small, quite, and only see each other on special occasions. Toula and Ian practiced different forms of nonverbal communication during the movie. Nonverbal communication means messages expressed by nonlinguistic means. Ian and Toula have both used face and eyes as a form of nonverbal communication. When Toula was still working as a waitress in her family restaurant, the dancing Zorba’s, she was caught staring at Ian by Ian and his friend. Her stari ng suggests that she was very interested in Ian and thought that he was handsome but Ian’s friend assumed that she was crazy because of how she was staring at Ian. Toula also caught Ian staring at her in the window of the travel agency that her aunt owns. Ian’s staring at Toula suggested that he was interested in her and thought that she was pretty. Ian used substituting, a form of nonverbal communication, to say hi to Toula in the window of the travel agency by waving and smiling at her. There were no words spoken to each other during this scene.Toula used body orientation to hide from Ian in her family’s restaurant behind the counter as he was leaving. She did this because she may have been embarrassed for getting caught staring at him and she may have also been shy. The same thing also happened in the travel agency when Toula hid behind the water dispenser when Ian turned his back to her to talk with his friend. When he turned back around he could not find he r and he walked off. Before Ian ran into the older lady on the street in front of the travel agency, he was using the gesture of possibly a duck, to get Toula’s attention and to make her laugh. This gesture made her laugh and smile and it was able to help her loosen up and feel a little more comfortable. Ian had to deal with the language barrier a few times in the movie, but there were two scenes that were quite comical. Ian asked Nick, how do you say â€Å"thank you† in Greek and he also asked Angelo, Toula’s cousin, how to say â€Å"everyone let’s go in the house,† and both times he was told something entirely different. This is similar to the â€Å"English-speaking representative of a U. S. soft drink manufacturer naively drew laughs from Mexican customers when she offered free samples of Fresca soda pop.In Mexican slang, the word fresca means ‘lesbian’(Adler). † In both of these cases, Ian and the representative thought they were saying one thing but it meant something else in the other language. Empathy was shown in the movie when Toula was turned down by her father for wanting to go to college for computer classes. When this happened her mother, Maria, showed empathy. Empathy means being able to experience the world form the other person’s point of view. Maria explained to Toula that Toula was just like her when she was her age.Maria stated that she knew how she felt and she would talk to Toula’s father about the computer classes. Maria showed the emotional dimension that helped her to get closer to Toula’s feelings. She also showed genuine concern for the welfare her daughter Toula. I can relate to people being interested in my culture just as Ian was very interested in Toula’s culture because it is different, but unlike Toula, I enjoy my culture and I embrace it. I have found that having a different culture, because most of my family is not from America, as a good thing.E ven though it makes you a little different, it also makes you unique and it adds to your identity as a person. If I were in the situations that Toula was in, I would have done some things different. If I were her, I would have told my parents before anything got serious, because it was shown in the movie that lies only lead to more problems. Telling them early that she found someone non-Greek would have also cause problems but because they wanted her to get married so bad, I think they would have became welcoming sooner. It is important to be proud of your culture and not ashamed because your culture and the people that raise you make you who you are. Also, many facial expressions can be perceived as in ways that you would not want or expect, like Toula getting caught staring at Ian and his friend, thinking that she was a little crazy. So sometimes when communicating nonverbally, it may be best to use words to communicate your actual feelings. ? Works Cited Page(s): 187, Looking Out, Looking In, 13th Edition by Ronald B. Design House Partnership

I cant cogitate how much we have changed in a relatively short time. From being an inward-looking manufacturer,we became a customer-focused be after and makeoperation. Now we argon an integrated proceeds provider. Most of our red-hot business comes from the partnerships we have formed with endeavor houses. In effect, we design harvest-times jointly with specialist design houses that have a well-known grunge, and offer them a complete service of manufacturing and distribution. In many ways we are now a business-to-business lodge quite an than abusiness-to consumer company. Experience in the decorative products industry had taught me the importance of expressive style and product civilizement, even in unremarkable products such as paint. Premium-priced colours and virgin textures would become popular for one or two years, back up by seize promotion and features in lifestyle magazines. The manufacturers and retailers who created and supported these products were dramatically more profitable than those who exactly provided standard projects. Instinctively, I felt that this moldiness also apply to homeware. We decided to develop a whole coordinated range of such items, and to open up a virgin distribution network for them to take care upmarket stores, kitchen equipment and speci ality retailers. Within a year of launching our first new range of kitchen homeware under the Concept brand name, we had all over 3000 retail outlets signed up, provided with point-of-sale display facilities.Press coverage generated an large interest which was reinforced by the product placement on several TV cookery and lifestyle programmes. We soon positive an entirely new market and at heart two years Concept products were providing over 75 per cent of our revenue and 90 per cent of our profits. The price realization of Concept products is many times higher than for the Focus range. To keep ahead we launched new ranges at regular intervals.

Porter’s Five Forces The Threat of New Entrants (Low) Essay

There is a great amount of economies of learning and scale in the crude industry for Example BP has been searching for rock inunct since 1901.
